Schedule, I release you. Check out five of the most intriguing non-conference matchups in the ACC.
    Date: 2 September 2010 | 3:13 pm
When we last left you, DT Marvin Austin had officially been suspended for violation of team rules. This morning, that list may have bloated into over a dozen more players, as ESPN's Joe Schad is reporting that as many as 16 players could be suspended for the LSU game: ï»żThe suspension marks the latest twist during a turbulent summer for North Carolina, which is preparing to play against LSU on Saturday without up to 16 players, sources said...

While I agree that Duke should be the cream of the crop in the ACC,  it is still debatable who is number 2. Virginia Tech with Malcolm Delaney really does make a strong case, guard play generally rules the ACC and The ACC’s leading scorer is back with last years team pretty much intact. Whether [...]...

One reader sent us a note recently asking why we hadn't written anything about the ongoing NCAA and internal investigations involving the UNC football program (by the way, thanks Lloyd, we are getting to it I promise) and the truth is I didn't really want to write anything because nothing had actually happened, per se. UNC held a big conference for the media that was basically just a chance to hear the equivalent of a press release read o...

For the second straight year, a trash-talking video between Duke and North Carolina recruits has surfaced. This time, it’s Carolina’s James McAdoo (No. 3 rated PF) and Duke’s Michael Gbinije (No. 5 rated SF). It’s some pretty funny stuff and at the very least, it shows that while the fans may hate each other, these [...]...

Today we begin a new list. After listing “The 2010 Top-25 players in the ACC,” we’re moving on to focus just on the younger generation. With so much turnaround in college basketball, incoming freshman are having a huge impact on ACC basketball. One failed class can set a program back for years. One amazing get [...]...

Austin Rivers is quickly becoming one of the most hyped basketball players in recent memory. The John Wall-like press and buckets of love coming his wayare nothing short of remarkable. In 2003 Carmelo Anthony proved to the world that a single recruit can elevate a team to championship fame. Since that time, institutes have been throwing the farm at recruits hoping for the same success. Last Halloween, John Wall dressed up like the Calipari Kid.Thi...

First posted at ACC Airball. Over at the Bleacher Report, Mike Mehta has a great article up about Jon Scheyer and whether the Duke Blue Devils should retire his number. When you look at the numbers (and there are plenty of them), it almost seems like an easy decision. Scheyer is top-10 all-time at Duke [...]...

As Duke fans we want to believe Dan Wiederer when he says that Austin Rivers is a lock for Duke, but as seen with the Harrison Barnes saga, and even the Terrence Jones commitment and then 180 degree turnaround nothing is set in stone until you see them in a uniform. You have to believe [...]...

ESPN released their schedule this week for the 24-hour tip-off marathon that kicks off their college basketball coverage, and Duke will be a part of it. The Devils will begin their title defense at home against Miami of Ohio at 7:30 PM (ET). Take a look at the entire schedule here. Speaking of Duke Basketball, Miles Plumlee made a little splash on the interwebs when he used 6'10" brother Mason as a prop to win the Duke camp dunk contest by va...

Surprise. Surprise. I’m dropping both the No 1 and No 2 players at the same time. The fact is, at this point, there are no more surprises. Why make you wait? Enjoy. What more can I say that hasn’t already been said about the incoming freshman? Harrison Barnes, a 6-8 forward, will be the most polished freshman to entire college basketball since Carmelo Anthony. In fact, he’s only coming to college because he has too. I know he talked all about going to business school, but this [...]...

Last year during Duke’s national championship run, Jon Scheyer and Kyle Singler received most of the attention as well as first team All-ACC honors. Let’s be clear though, the Blue Devils don’t even come close to winning the national championship without Nolan Smith. While Singler and Scheyer had brilliant moments, both had stretches during the [...]...

Back in April, less than 24 hours before the deadline to withdraw from the NBA draft, junior point guard, Malcolm Delaney sent this tweet: “IM COMIN BACC TO SCHOOL… Final 4.” At that moment, all of Blacksburg celebrated. In every sport, there is always one of those guys that if you slipped him onto another roster, he’d be all the rage. In the ACC, this player is Tracy Smith. After two years of growing pains, Smith bullied his way to the top of the ACC last year. He was 7th in scoring (16.5 [...]...

Hey now... I kid! I kid! (You can blame those UNC party boat pictures that came out last year for that headline.) Carolina basketball saw their first competitive action of the year in a two-game preseason exhibition tour in the Bahamas this week, and naturally they breezed past the Commonwealth Bank Giants (wait, who?)130-87, and beat the Bahamas All Stars 123-86. Obviously the results have to be taken with a fairly large grain of salt, since acc...

Current update on the UNC football investigation: everyone seems to want to know how Marvin Austin got to Californiato work out at the Proactive Sports training facility, and they are particularly interested in assistant coach John Blake's relationship with agent Gary Wichard. There were so many moments from last year's title run that made it so special to enjoy watching from the sidelines. One that most Duke fans I knew pegged as the one that needed to happen in order for Duke to be a true National Title Contender was for the Plumlee Brothers to be a consistent offensive force. While the Devils didn't end up needing that on a regular basis, it was always nice when it happened. One game in particular, both P...

Rising Juniors can receive telephone calls once per month through July 31st, 2011. Rising Seniors can be called twice per week, and off campus contact is only one month and a week away. It's looking more and more like Class of 2011 commit James McAdoo may be coming to UNC a year early, which, as Bart mentioned below, turns Carolina's current recruiting class from "great" to "just plain stoopid." Additionally, SI's Luke Winn and ESPN's Eamonn Brennaneach note that McAdoo could very well become the face of an early-entry trend should he decide to go to Carolina, as more recruits explore the idea. The first of two narrow decisions of this list pits two Vic Bubas squads against each other to determine who the best team of the 1960s was.  Both the 1963 and 1966 squads went on to lose in the Final Four and then win the consolation game, garnering the NCAA Third Place trophy (a silver [...]...

Prior to his commitment to Duke, Felix held offers from Arizona State, Idaho, Kent State and South Florida. With the absence of [...]...

While doing research for my current project on the top 10 Duke teams of all time I decided to put this together.  Enjoy. I was doing some browsing last night and I found a very interesting guest blog entry on Fox Sports Community by none other than, Austin Rivers. After reading this I was sort of confused. It is only May, but there have already been dramatic shifts in the ACC coaching ranks. At no time in the history of the ACC have 3 coaching changes taken place in one off season. That came to an end this spring as Clemson, Boston College and Wake Forest will all have new coaches patrolling [...]...

A couple of the ACC/BIG TEN challenge games leaked yesterday. The official release date is on Thursday, but I am going to take the time to preview the games that leaked. Just by looking at the matchups that leaked, it should be a good Challenge this year. Overall, the ACC is 10-1 since the inception [...]...

Well we knew someone was going to transfer, I did not expect the two Wear Brothers to be the ones. According to Long Beach Press-Telegram, due to undisclosed reasons, the BOTH David and Travis Wear have decided to transfer after one year at UNC. Here is what their father said: “Dave Wear said he discussed [...]...

At this point Duke should be the favorite to repeat as champions, and basically a lock for preseason No. 1 overall. On paper, they look to be even better than the team that cut down the nets in 2010? (Depending on the Plumlees development). Duke looses Thomas, Zoubek, and Scheyer, but  replace the “role players” [...]...

According to Rivals.com, Austin Rivers has publicly stated that Duke is his new leader and barely mentioning Florida. I just got back from vacation and, franlky, it has taken me that long to reflect on Duke’s national championship season. As I alluded to in my previous post, the 2004 Duke Blue Devils check in at #10.  You might be asking yourself how could a team featuring Duke’s all time leading scorer, rebounder, shot blocker, stealer and 2nd leading assist man be all the way down at 10.  Well, allow me to explain myself. It was a storybook finish for Brian Zoubek. Something of a punch line for most of his four-year career at Duke, the light suddenly went on midway through his senior season. The game slowed down for the 7′1″ center and he quickly became a force defensively and on the glass. And he needed every inch of that [...]...
